Ariane Sherine - The Atheists Guide to Christmas

5:30 pm, Wed 25th November 2009

Birmingham Borders

42 atheist celebrities, comedians, scientists and writers give their funny and serious tips for enjoying the Christmas season. Last year, Guardian journalist Ariane Sherine launched the Atheist Bus Campaign and ended up raising over GBP150,000, enough to place the advert 'There's probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life' on 800 UK buses in January 2009. Now Ariane and dozens of other atheist writers, comedians and scientists are joining together to raise money for a very different cause. The Atheist's Guide to Christmas is a funny, thoughtful handbook all about enjoying Christmas, from 42 of the world's most entertaining atheists. It features everything from an atheist Christmas miracle to a guide to the best Christmas pop hits, and contributors include Richard Dawkins, Charlie Brooker, Ben Goldacre, Jenny Colgan, David Baddiel, Simon Singh, AC Grayling, Brian Cox and Richard Herring. The full book advance and all royalties will go to the UK HIV charity Terrence Higgins Trust.

Editor, Ariane Sherine, will be in store to sign copies of The Atheists Guide to Christmas from 5.30-6.30pm.

"For a millionth of a second the car grazed the drenched moorland. If it had come down on any other patch of ground Finn would simply have been another statistic. Death by dangerous driving. But the car hit the surface of the Earth at Exit 43. It slid through the membrane like a hot knife through butter, plunging into the darkness and catapulting Finn from its shattered windscreen as it fell...."

Saturday 1:00pm, 05 Dec 2009 - Duncan McNair - The Morello Letters - Birmingham Borders

Duncan McNair - The Morello Letters

1:00 pm, Sat 5th December 2009

Birmingham Borders

This is a collection of hilarious letters sent to the great and good of British society. Mr. Morello is a slightly confused, pear-shaped 45 year old Italian immigrant living with his larger, plump wife Mrs. Morello and three children - Tosti, Amphora and Rizzo - in that most salubrious of London suburbs: Ealing. As a family, they share a curious fondness for all things British and yet by dint of their Italian heritage, struggle to come to terms with some of our more esoteric characteristics. As such, the ever-inquisitive Mr. Morello, a fastidious and prodigious letter writer, takes it upon himself to correspond with the great institutions and individuals of our fine nation - from Tony Blair, George W Bush, The Lord Chancellor, Richard Branson, and the Archbishop of Canterbury to Gordon Ramsay and The Bank of England, The Guild of Professional English Butlers and British Home Stores to West Bromwich Albion Football Club - in an attempt to have his seemingly endless list of quandaries answered by the experts and at times, in vain attempts to secure employment for his idling children.
